Scott Hoover thanks his lucky stars for having been picked from among 1400 aspirants for the job of water and electricity meter reader in Tacoma’s utility department. The last time when recruitment was being done here the number of applicants were in the region of 600. And the applicants this where from a cross-section of people, many of them recently hived off from their jobs. The job itself required a basic high school diploma, a year in general customer service and then there were the written tests. Twenty seven candidates were short-listed, Hoover among them and to his great delight he was selected to take the job. Another 5 were recruited on a temporary basis. The job carries a pay check of $ 39,000 for temporary workers to $49000+benefits for those confirmed. The work involves walking from home to home reading the water and electric meter involving a day’s walk of 14 miles. Hoover thinks that the fact he had worked here the last 10 months on a temporary basis may have helped him. But he is sure happy to have got his job from among much competition.
